Myanmar is slowly opening to the outside world. While foreign visitors is still few and far between as compared to its neighbouring countries, I must say that it is possibly one of the best countries I have visited. Few years down the road, Myanmar will no longer be where it is now and I reckon if things are moving and developing as fast as it is now in the country, Yangon which used to be its capital (now its Naypyidaw…I bet most of you didn’t know that.) will just be like Bangkok, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh. So, really, now is the best time to visit the country. (Note: While there are many other interesting facts to discover about this country and its wonderful people, I won’t go on about it here 🙂 You need to experience it yourself.)
Since opening up, there are many upcoming international hotels blooming around Yangon area as well as small boutiques ones or bed and breakfast. However, generally the overall price of accommodation in Yangon can be a tad too pricey even for a small tiny bed and breakfast. But do not make that as a hindrance from your list of places to travel to.
For example, The Garden Home Bed and Breakfast (GHBB) is one of the best accommodation choices that I have made. Located in a quiet lane – Bagyoke Museum Lane (opposite the German Embassy), this is not your typical bed and breakfast. It’s a bed and breakfast with a 5 star treatment. In my previous review, I gave quite a stellar feedback on a Hanoi hotel. This I must say is even better.
GHBB offers only just 10 rooms that is equipped with the amenities of any proper hotel – towels, toiletries, bathrobes, bedroom slippers, satellite tv with lots of channels to watch from, air-conditioned, small refrigerator etc. It’s actually housed in a small bungalow with a beautiful well-kept garden. Room choices include single room, double room and triple room with big comfortable beds.
Additionally, there’s also a small art gallery next to it which you can drop by anytime to view the paintings on display.
While it may not be centrally located in Yangon town area (where the Bagyoke or Scotts Market is located), it is closed enough (about 10 minutes) to get there by taxi (costing approximately about 2000 kyats or sometimes 3000 kyat, which is about USD2 or USD3). The easiest way to get around is via taxis and yes, there are plenty of them. It’s close by to a nice big shady park as well as walking distance to the amazing gold Shwedagon Pagoda – a must see in Yangon. (You have not been to Myanmar if you have not visited the Shwedagon Pagoda).
But what makes GBHH a great place to stay, I must say is the staff. The best service I have ever experience in my life – attentive, patient, friendly, always go all out to make sure that I have whatever I want e.g. packing breakfast for me without even me prompting them to do so on the day of my departure, waking up at ungodly hour to make sure that I get on the taxi to the airport, even being that little tour guide showing me around Bagyoke Museum Lane area all without asking for any additional extra tip. These are the little things that makes a place great to stay.
Always remember it’s not so much on the number of stars that counts, it’s the staff and the great service that a hotel provides that matters most.
